What will tomorrow’s energy supply look like—and what aspects of it are already a reality in Jena today? How can cities be supplied with energy in a sustainable, secure, and affordable way? And how can the energy transition be successfully implemented in urban areas—technically, economically, and socially? The exhibition ENERGY—WHAT MOVES US addresses these questions.

EnergyLab
Located right in the heart of downtown at Löbderstraße 6 is the Energy Lab, the central showroom of the exhibition ENERGY – WHAT MOVES US. Here, visitors can experience firsthand the findings and innovations from the JenErgieReal real-world laboratory —ranging from smart charging infrastructure to heat utilization in buildings, energy storage, and sector coupling, all the way to the networking of decentralized energy systems and grid components in a virtual power plant. Visitors can discover these innovative technologies, understand how they work, and learn how they contribute to a sustainable energy supply. At the same time, the EnergyLab offers insights into the background of the energy transition —from the history of energy use to its impacts on the climate and environment, all the way to the specific climate effects in Jena. In addition, visitors can also discover concrete ways to get involved: from reducing their own carbon footprint to exploring new career fields and engaging in social initiatives. The EnergieLabor combines exhibitions, interactive experiences, and hands-on stations into a space for new perspectives, exchange, and active participation.

Platform at Engelplatz
Engelplatz serves as the second central exhibition area for the “ENERGY – WHAT MOVES US” exhibition and complements the Energy Lab in the heart of downtown Jena. On a walk-on, abstract map of Jena, visitors can see at a glance where the energy innovations of the JenErgieReal real-world lab have already been implemented. Short informational texts and graphics explain the technical innovations at each location. QR codes provide in-depth insights into the initiatives and show how they are integrated into the Jena Energy Transition Real-World Lab.
This provides a concise overview of the real-world lab’s innovations—ranging from modern heating and district heating technologies to storage solutions, photovoltaic systems, smart grid infrastructure, charging infrastructure for e-mobility, and energy management in public transit, all the way to local energy trading, neighborhood mobility stations, and fall detection in long-term care. Here, visitors not only learn more about the technical innovations but also experience how the energy supply of the future is already taking shape in Jena today.
Energy Innovations in Urban Spaces – Eight Locations of the JenErgieReal Real-World Lab
The exhibition ENERGY – WHAT MOVES US not only brings the innovations of the JenErgieReal Real-World Lab to life in the Energy Lab and at Engelplatz, but also situates them directly within the urban landscape. At eight locations in Jena, specific measures being tested as part of the real-world lab are presented. The sites cover various areas of the urban energy system—from residential buildings and mobility to grid infrastructure and heat generation. At each site, an information panel explains the respective technical innovation. QR codes also offer the option to access further information and background details.
